The Height of Haiku Challenge - Summary and Note of Thanks

WOW!

A month full of Haiku is done. 30 days of fun, writing and exploration of the form. Thanks to all who took it up, and congratulations as well. It was difficult to manage writing, hosting and of course, going on with my everyday life as well. But I have enjoyed every moment of it.

I like to summarize with stats. I’ve been known to consider stats a lot. This month had 25 themes, 5 days where you the poets had the power to write for what you wish. In all, we saw 90 writers arrive at this meme. We saw a minimum of 1132 haiku; that’s an average of 38 haiku each day. From a least entry of 30 (Liberty) to a maximum of 44 (Yearn), this challenge took Haiku to new heights for sure.

Some of you had even asked for the prompts to become daily from now on. As much as I’d like to, I won’t be able to. So till then, this prompt site will continue its odyssey weekly. After a hectic month of September, we’re gonna take a week to replenish our energy and return from next Saturday. There is going to be a small change in the timing of the prompt. From October 9th 2011, the prompt will come out sometime between 9AM and 12PM IST. This is to accommodate for my limited internet access on weekends.

Hope to see you all back at Haiku Heights as we continue in our haiku journey after a rest stop. The prompt on October 9th, our 89th prompt will be IMPOSSIBLE. (That’s the prompt word, not a sentiment by the way!!)

On a sweet note of ending, I want to say that I hope to host this monthly feast again in April and September 2012 as well. It’s advance planning only of course. April is Poem-A-Day month for a lot of us anyways. Before that, there’ll be a haiku month hosted by SiS at his place too. That’s expected to take place in February I think. (I’d taken the idea from him, with permissions just in case he decided to sue me for copyright later. Don’t think he will though ;) ). I'll let you know that details of his challenge with link in January. At HH, it'll be next in April 2012.

So onward we march.

Some of my readers, and new writers at Haiku Heights had asked me how to write a proper Haiku.
Haiku is Japanese poetry form that has three meaningful lines which are complete and reflecting nature.
Haiku have syllabic limitations as well. A traditional one has eleven or seventeen syllables, in a strict 3-5-3 or 5-7-5 format.

We wish to celebrate the haikai forms through your words. some poets are straying away from the Haiku format so kindly stay within the Haiku limitations. I know it is difficult but very challenging too!!

THE HEIGHT OF HAIKU CHALLENGE - SEPTEMBER 2011

How high are you on haiku? Do you love the form and feel you can write a haiku a day? Do you want to try?

Haiku Heights is going to ask you that question this coming September. 30 days, 30 haikus is the challenge I'm throwing to you. Are you going to answer it?

The challenge is just that; the remaining rules of Haiku Heights still hold for the duration of the challenge.

I'll give the themes before the challenge begins. The prompts from #59 to #88, 30 themes will be there in the Haiku Heights Year 2 page on or before 23rd August 2011.
I'll read whoever writes a haiku and comment; if not a haiku or senryu, I'll remove the link.
The challenge is to write 30 haikus in 30 days, but you are free to not write for a prompt too. You can write for one prompt or few prompts or all thirty. I leave it to you.
The haiku is to be written that day, sharing old haikus matching the theme isn't the aim of the challenge. You can write multiple haiku for the theme in one day too.
The link widgets will be open from 12AM IST to 12PM IST the next day so all time zones are covered to a majority extent..
I reserve the right to remove a link if I find it to be hurtful or malicious.

Thank you. It has been one year to the day since this venture, Haiku Heights began. And it is with your support that it has come to this mark.

I’m glad to have seen a lot of people try haiku out. It hasn’t always been exact, I’ve mentioned the syllabic restrictions most of the time I’ve seen someone err in their trials, and have tried to keep up to commenting for those who have shared. Some have pursued it diligently, some not found the found the form to their liking and gone off after a week or two. All in all, it has been a memorable first year for me, and I hope for most if not all of you too.

Being somewhat a statistics minded person, I just went through the year in numbers. More than 100 of you tried your hand at the haiku form, and from the 52 weeks, at least 1446 entries have been shared here. That’s an average of 28 each week. The site has got nearly 17000 visits too. We’ve had the minimum of 17 entries in week 15, and the maximum of 45 entries was in week 40. We’ve had 29 of our readers suggesting topics for a haiku, from which 22 of them have got at least one topic accepted. We’ve had Magical Mystical Teacher participating for 48 of 52 prompts. Ramesh Sood (RS) has been there since nearly the starting prompt too. He has 47 of 52 prompts. Others who’ve been here most are Jingle, Gemma Wiseman, Lady Nimue, Nanka, SiS and Rumya.

Thanks to each and every one of you once again, and hope more of you come next year, have fun and love writing haiku and we go to more heights as well.

Haiku Heights wouldn't have reached where it has reached without your help, through suggestion of prompts, some of which I found very challenging. I've taken into consideration most of what you've suggested, and they're now placed in the page for Prompt Suggestions. As I use them, I'll be striking them out over there. You can use the same page for suggestions of future prompts as well. The page is here:

Some of you suggested to reveal more of the future prompts, rather than just one. So keeping that in mind, the next five haiku themes to come at Haiku Heights can be found in the sidebar. I'm working on that, and will get a smaller one from this Sunday.

Z to A, in 26 Days... and The Ghoul's Gala

I’ve completed 900 posts, keeping my Blogging journey moving after the shift to Wordpress in August. And I’m as usual, always in love with writing. I think it was my April that was most memorable, with a post corresponding to each letter of the alphabet written all month… So today, when I saw the calendar, I noticed that the month of November has 26 days, excluding Sundays. A reincarnation of that A to Z challenge seemed a nice possibility, so I’ve decided each day, starting November 1st, excluding Sundays, I’m going to write a post, themes corresponding to each letter of the alphabet, this time in reverse, from Z to A. I’m calling it the Z to A in 26 Days Challenge.

I’m inviting any blogger interested to take part in the challenge to try their hand at it. They can share their links as a comment in the corresponding posts at my Wordpress blog and read other participating bloggers too. It’s just a writing challenge, so no limitations on the genre, just more than 55 words. If anyone partaking in the challenge along with me, do mention it in the comment here. If many, I’ll fashion a simple badge for the challenge, to place along with your post!

Now, to such a month long party, I’m also planning a pre-party. With October 31st being a Sunday, and also Halloween, I’m hosting a costume party, the Ghoul’s Gala here at I Rhyme Without Reason. It’s an open house party again, all you’ve to do to enter is write a Halloween party post in your blog, get yourself a costume, and link back to the Ghoul’s Gala page on October 31st and you can join and visit other blog houses for trick or treating! The blog, as you’d have noticed, has already been themed for Halloween, so looking forward to seeing you all at the Gala.

Update on the Gala will be given on 29th October again. I’ll try to get in a Mr.Linky if possible, else the comments section can serve the purpose, since URLs are automatically linked.
