Welcome to Haiku Heights!

Welcome to Haiku Heights, a place for weekly Haiku prompts. Every Saturday, some time between 9AM and 12PM IST, I'll give a word as the theme for the week's haiku. You are free to use it as you feel appropriate (in a Haiku, or Senryu ; not a free verse). You can use the word, or build upon its meaning, the only rule here is that it should sync with the topic.! We hope you enjoy sharing your haiku with us here each week.

If you are a contributor here, you can also suggest topics for future prompts. I'll save your suggestions and pick up one from the list at random each Sunday! You can suggest at the prompt suggestions page.

The Height of Haiku Challenge, Day 15 - Prompt #73 - Patience

Welcome to Day 15 of The Height of Haiku Challenge, where you're challenge is to write 30 haiku in 30 days, with the themes given here. The prompt today and #73 overall is PATIENCE suggested by Vinati.

This prompt will end at 12PM IST on 16th September.

These are the general rules here. I rephrase them just so no confusion exists.
1. Write a haiku on the prompt given and post in your blog.
2. Link back to Haiku Heights either with the code given in the bottom bar here, or with a hyperlink.
3. Enter your name and link into the Linky widget. (It should be the post link, and not your blog link in general)
4. Read and enjoy as many of the other writers as well.

  • Some of my readers, and new writers at Haiku Heights had asked me how to write a proper Haiku.
  • Haiku is Japanese poetry form that has three meaningful lines which are complete and reflecting nature.
  • Haiku have syllabic limitations as well. A traditional one has eleven or seventeen syllables, in a strict 3-5-3 or 5-7-5 format.
We wish to celebrate the haikai forms through your words. some poets are straying away from the Haiku format so kindly stay within the Haiku limitations. I know it is difficult but very challenging too!!

Thank you. for more details READ HERE.

For more on the Challenge, including a complete list of the 30 topics, please visit THIS PAGE.

Please note: I will remove the link if the post is just a random one or another form.
Prompt #74, begins Sept 16th at 12AM IST: CHIME.

There's news of an international poetry competition on my blog today.

I wonder if you could limit the poets entry to one Haiku per person. It is a great deal to read and comment on just one poets Haiku let alone three or four by the same poet. Maybe I am wrong but I will make a guess that these poets have other poems to write and read.

Thank You,
Melanie

Hey Melanie :) Yeah, it is time consuming to read a haiku and comment, I agree.. I'm still behind on my bloghops! However, I don't wish to limit the creativity!

You could read as many as you can, there is no written rule here on any day that it's a must that each entry has to be read by the participants :)

Thank you,
Leo.

Leo I feel that these poets worked hard on these poems and therefore I must read every one.
I have notice that only a few bother to read mine. But hey that's how it goes.
Thanks for answering me. I will complain no more.

Hey Melanie, I never saw it as a complaint, but a request..

I know and have seen that not not every writer reads the others, and I see you and a handful others read and comment at almost, if not every, post. It's their personal choice I believe.

I'm really sorry I couldn't limit entries. I'd said at the start of the challenge that multiple entries per theme is OK.. so at the halfway stage to change it wouldn't be right I think!

I hope it is ok to say something here...Feel free to remove it if not appropriate, Leo.

Your concern is very understandable Melanie and appreciate your intention to be able to read everyone because we all know that it is hardwork that goes into those words.

I try to do that too. I can say with certainty that I have read more than 90% of the entries if not all, once. Curiosity is one thing and trying to understand how this haiku works and how everybody interprets it differently is what motivates me to jump from one entry to the other. Not an easy thing to do and time consuming for sure.

Some of us don't say anything and just read and leave, some comment, some click the thumbs up/down icons, some click the like button, some give you star ratings on the post, some are shy, on some posts I don't get it even after reading many times and feel stupid about myself and some are too intimidating that I dare not say anything at all.....and so on and so forth. Like Leo said, it is all a personal choice. You do express very well Melanie.

The main idea is to have fun and enjoy what we are doing. To have the opportunity to share and to be viewed (which otherwise might never be cared for - I can relate to this a lot) with a group is a wonderful thing. We all like to be noticed and that is only natural and you are. I can only thank you for the encouragement.

Also, a note to say to all that we are half way up there. These have been my interestingly long 15 days! :-)... High standard job by everyone, as far as I can see it. Lets not slack folks coz only 15 more to go! I hope I don't, after this long lecture.. hehe!

Thank you Leo and sorry about taking this space.

I did three with a tag line at the end. I hope that's okay!

I missed the deadline - I've been in hospital for the last 3 days, and have just arrived home.
I wrote one haiku a day while I was there, but didn't have the list of prompts. Oddly, the one I wrote for yesterday.

I'm as guilty as anyone in posting the occasional multiple entry. But I do read most if not all - though I don't always comment. The haiku have usually said all there is to be said!
